Swine Flu Impact: UWEC Cancels Summer Program in Mexico

Posted:

Eau Claire (WQOW) - A day after UW-Eau Claire study abroad students say they received an e-mail telling them not to worry about the Swine Flu, the university has canceled the summer program.

The university says the program was scheduled to send 23 students to Mexico for six weeks.  In a media release, UW-Eau Claire says the program was canceled based on reports from the Centers for Disease Control, World Health Organization and the U.S. State Department.

Those students were set to leave on May 26th.  They will now be offered a chance to study in Costa Rica instead.

On Monday, News 18 interviewed UWEC Sophomore Jess Sabelko not long after she received an e-mail from the university about the situation.  "They just told us not to be worried.  The city we're going to is 400 miles away from where the outbreaks are and they'll keep us updated," said Sabelko.

There are five UWEC students who are currently studying in Mexico.  Their classes have been canceled until May 6th as a precaution.  The students have been given the option of returning home.
