Washington (WQOW) - Someone may be trying to rob you, and you may have no idea.
The Consumer Federation of America's new national survey found lots of people are getting duped, by fake check scams. The director says the results are disturbing.
"According to the results of a CFA survey, nearly one-third of the adult population in the United States has been approached with some form of fake check scam. And two percent of those actually sent the money. That's about the same response as legitimate direct-marketers get, and it means at least 1.3 million Americans have lost money to these scams," says Susan Grant, Consumer Federation of America.
The survey showed, on average, consumers lost $3,000-$4,000 to scammers. The most common form of fake check scams, shown in the survey, are some form of sweep-stakes, lotteries, grants or work-at-home opportunities.
As a reminder, no matter how convincing the check looks and if it seems too good to be true. it probably is. If you come across one of these checks, call your local police department.
