Rice Lake (WQOW) - A longtime Rice Lake business is closing its doors.
Sunday, the last free skate was held at the Coliseum in Rice Lake. The business has been open under several owners for around three decades. The current owner says the economic downfall is the reason behind the closing, but residents in the area hope the idea of a skating rink in the area can roll on.
"It was a big thing when we were young. The music, the people that were there, all your friends were there, it was something to do," says Paul McDermott, Rice Lake resident.
For years, folks have been coming to the Coliseum for birthdays, fun and to meet new people.
"In the 80's we had air band contests and what-not and me and my buddies were up on the stage in zipper pants and had the hair and Mickey Mouse guitars and just jamming away," says Roy Polichnia, Coliseum owner.
"I had a great time working here, probably the favorite job I'll ever have," says Jeff Stowell, former Coliseum employee.
On Sunday, dozens of folks participated in what could be the business's last free skate. The Coliseum is closing because of a decrease in foot traffic.
"When I found out it was closing I was a little dumbfounded and a little disappointing," says McDermott.
"Working here, putting in 80 hours a week didn't seem like it. You just came in, do what you love, when the kids come in you get to be out there with them and help them out with learning to skate," says Polichnia.
And with very few roller rinks left in western Wisconsin, residents hope the close is only temporary.
"I've seen a lot of rinks go through transitions like this, some have closed and others have pulled through and I'm really hoping it'll still be a rink yet. It's been really good for the community I think. It's a good safe place for kids to come and adults too," says Stowell.
Polichnia held a cookout for all his employees at the end of the day as well.
For the next month, the building is being rented out as a fireworks warehouse. After that, it will be up for sale.
