Research program eyes ways to keep invasive species out of Great Lakes

Posted:

Eau Claire (WQOW) - A Lake Superior research center is working to stop the spread of an invasive species that often travels on cargo ships.

A research program called the Great Ships Initiative uses a testing center that imitates the ships ballast system. That is used to help keep a ship balanced before it take on cargo.

The treatment systems use everything from ultraviolet light to sound waves to ozone to kill organisms that might otherwise harm the Great Lakes ecosystem.
