Drought causes early color change in trees

Posted:

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Some area trees are already starting to get a little color.

A number of trees in Eau Claire are beginning to show those yellows, oranges and reds. Trees typically begin to change color in late Septemer and early October as the days become cooler and there is less sunlight. But Eau Claire City Forester Todd Chwala says this year is different.

"Most of the trees that have started to change colors early are more of an indication of trees under stress. This summer, we did go through our sixth consecutive year of drought-like conditions, and 6 years of drought like conditions is certainly going to effect the trees in a negative way," says Chwala.

The Chippewa Valley is nearly 7 inches below its normal precipitation for this time of year.
