MAPLEWOOD, Minn. (AP) - Eleven pedestrians have died this year near Minnesota railroad crossings, more than twice the number killed last year.
Two people were killed in separate incidents this week, prompting transportation officials to issue a safety alert.
Donna Naumann is the executive director of Minnesota Operation Lifesaver. She says people need to be reminded how dangerous it is to walk on or near railroad tracks.
She says it's easy to misjudge a train's speed and distance, especially at night.
A 51-year-old man died Monday near Winona State University when he fell into the path of an oncoming train. The next day a 24-year-old man was struck and killed near Litchfield.
Five people were killed in rail-pedestrian crashes in Minnesota last year.
