"We are born selfish. Let us understand what our own selfish genes are up to, because we may then at least have the chance to upset their designs, something that no other species has ever aspired to."

-"The Selfish Gene" by Richard Dawkins

It is often argued by psychologists and philosophers that there is no such thing as true altruism. It is our nature as biological beings, they claim, to look out for Number One.

If that's true, others argue, then we must learn to give selflessly. We must make a special effort to give of ourselves.

I happen to believe scientists who say that altruism feels good. That giving actually releases feel-good chemicals into the brain that reinforce the behavior.

Rick Mohr of Eau Claire Ford needn't be the one to say it, but he should feel pretty good about himself. He and his wife Sherry are involved in more charitable causes than there are extras on a Lincoln Town Car. The Career Development Center. The American Red Cross. Chippewa Valley Safe Kids. Trunk or Treat. T-ball in Altoona. Rick makes that special effort look effortless.

In the first part of our conversation, Rick talks about the nature of "giving back". In the second part, we shift gears to address the auto industry. Why do Americans love their big vehicles so? What is the future of the automobile? Will we ever achieve a hundred miles per gallon?

Rick Mohr, In Person. Only on TV 18. Feel the Rush.
