Local soldier honored by former school

Eau Claire (WQOW) -- A local soldier was honored Monday by her former elementary school in Eau Claire.

Private First Class Charlene Layton was given the Citizenship Award by the third grade class at Lakeshore Elementary. Each year, students study what it means to be a good citizen. They then choose someone in the community who personifies those traits. Layton, who is on leave from Iraq, told students it does not take much to be a good citizen.

“If somebody needs help, go out there, help them. Don't just stand there and watch them. Basically stepping out of a little box and just making it a point to say hey, I'm a person to, and I can do big things too," says Layton.

The class also wrote a special song for Layton. She returns to Iraq later this month. Her tour is expected to wrap up early next year.
