UW-Stout Campus (WQOW) - For UW-Stout students, going green in the dining hall now means more than choosing a salad for lunch.
The university's dining service is participating in the Eco-Products million gallon challenge. Eco-Products is a company that's encouraging universities to go green to cut down on energy use. Right now, 100 percent of UW-Stout's take-out packaging for food and beverages can be composted.
"In a year's time, it's estimated we'll save over 27,000 pounds of greenhouse gasses from being emitted into the atmosphere. So, that's reason enough to switch. It costs us more but it's an investment in the future by the campus," says Ann Thies, director of UW-Stout dining services.
That kind of packaging is about twice as expensive as other options but uses less energy to produce.
