Chippewa County (WQOW) - The Zunker memorial will likely stay right where it is unless someone files a lawsuit. That's according to the chairman of a Chippewa County committee.
The memorial, which sits on public land outside the courthouse, is dedicated to Deputy Jason Zunker who died in the line of duty last year. A concern with that memorial has been an inscription about Jesus on one of the tablets. The Freedom from Religion Foundation said that raised concerns about separation of church and state.
Two months ago, it called on the county to return the monument to the group that raised the money for it so it can be placed on private land. No lawsuits have been filed and this week, Mike Murphy from the county's buildings and grounds committee told News 18, as long as it stays that way, the memorial will remain where it is.
