Man exonerated in Wisconsin murder denied parole

Associated Press - November 24, 2009 11:55 AM ET

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The man exonerated in the 1980 rape and murder of a University of Wisconsin-Madison student will remain behind bars in New Mexico.

WKOW-TV reports the parole board in New Mexico has denied the release of Ralph Armstrong. 1 of his attorneys, Jerome Buting, says they will appeal the parole board's decision.

Armstrong spent 29 years in a Wisconsin prison until the state Supreme Court overturned his guilty verdict in 2005.

Before his time in Wisconsin, Armstrong was convicted of sex assault in New Mexico. He was on parole when he was charged with assaulting and killing Charise Kamps in Wisconsin in 1980. The New Mexico Parole Board revoked Armstrong's parole for alcohol and drug use violations.
