Eau Claire (WQOW) - A special committee is sticking with the proposal for a 16 day gun deer hunt. What's changing is where that hunt would fall on the calendar. The early start date is no longer part of the proposal.
The Natural Resources Board put together a committee to come up with alternatives to the earn-a-buck program that was scrapped. One idea was to hold a 16 day hunt with either an early or traditional start date.
Public hearings were held on the idea and thousands of letters and e-mails were sent to the DNR about it. Hunters were overwhelmingly against an early start date, so the committee will go with a recommendation for a longer season with a traditional opening date, the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
The Natural Resources Board plans to present that idea at its meeting in Madison next month. If approved, it would take effect next year.
