Driver arrested following fatal snowboarding accident

Jackson County (Press Release) - On December 26, 2009 Dylan Nerby, age 9, was struck by a motor vehicle in Jackson County and died because of injuries suffered during that incident.

The driver of the vehicle has been identified as Jarred A. Mortenson, age 19, of Taylor.  Mortenson was accompanied in the vehicle by a family member, Gary Mortenson, also of Taylor.

Jarred Mortenson was questioned at the scene and eventually arrested and booked for Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Detectable Amount of a Controlled Substance.  No formal charges have been brought against Mortenson at this time as the Jackson County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.  The Wisconsin State Patrol is assisting in the investigation.  Mortenson was released from the Jackson County Jail on a signature bond.

News 18 is learning more about the boy who was killed in a snowboarding accident near Black River Falls.

Investigators say their preliminary investigation shows 9-year-old Dylan Nerby slid onto County Trunk P and was hit by a van on Saturday. Dylan was flown to Luther Hospital in Eau Claire but did not survive. 

Dylan was a fourth grader at Blair-Taylor Elementary.

The sheriff's department says the driver stopped and agreed to be questioned after the crash happened.

A 9-year-old boy is dead after being struck by a vehicle in Jackson County.

It happened just after noon on Saturday, on County Highway P near the Township of Curran. Authorities say the boy entered the roadway while snowboarding near the home of his grandparents, when the driver of an oncoming van struck the child.

The boy was airlifted to Luther Hospital in Eau Claire, but was sadly pronounced dead after arrival. Authorities say the driver of the vehicle was a 19-year-old rural Taylor man.

The incident remains under investigation by the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. All names are being withheld pending notification of relatives at this time.
