Eau Claire (WQOW) - One of the hottest tickets in town is easier to get your hands on this year because hundreds of seats have been added. Thursday night is the big Eau Claire North versus Eau Claire Memorial hockey game.
As you may know, Hobbs Ice Arena has been undergoing a major renovation. So far, the project is about 70 percent complete. Some improvements that are already finished include up to 500 more seats for spectators and a third sheet of indoor ice.
"Even with the addition of a third rink, our gas and electric bills are less than they were with the old facility which is pretty amazing since we've increased the size of the facility by 33 percent yet our energy consumption has decreased by 10 percent," says Phil Fieber, Eau Claire Parks & Rec Director.
The city received $400,000 in stimulus money to help with some of those energy improvements. The building also includes office space for the rink manager, Parks and Rec department and coaches. The rest of the work, which includes a new low energy ceiling, is expected to be completed by the end of summer.
