MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A proposal that would limit the public's access to the popular online court records database known as CCAP has cleared a major hurdle in the Legislature.
An Assembly committee voted to pass the measure on Wednesday, meaning it is now available for the full Assembly to debate it.
The vote was a tie at 3-3, leaving it up to committee chairman Rep. Fred Kessler to decide whether to move it along for more debate. Kessler is a Democratic former judge who is a co-sponsor of the bill.
Even though Kessler supports it, he said after the hearing he thinks the measure will have a hard time finding enough support with Democrats who control the Assembly to get it passed.
The bill would remove from public view pending cases and those where there was no conviction.
