Eau Claire (WQOW) - A local fire department will be able to reach new heights thanks to a purchase from Florida.
The Fall Creek Area Fire District bought a truck from a fire department in Florida. The truck is used. It cost the department about a fourth of what it would have to buy new. The truck is equipped with an aerial ladder, which the department has never had on its trucks before.
"Before we had to climb up a ladder to the roof of the house and then hook a roof ladder to the pique of the house and climb up on it," says Jamie Kaeding, assistant chief at Fall Creek Area Fire District. "And, of course, if the roof collapsed, that wasn't safe and the firemen get hurt. Now, with this, we're able to extend it over the house and do our work from this ladder. And if the roof collapsed, then we'll be safe."
The department says the truck also has enough space in the cabin for firefighters to put oxygen tanks on as they're headed to a fire. That's something other trucks haven't allowed them to do.
