Rep. Jeff Smith Receives Humane Legislator Award

Madison (Press Release) – Wisconsin citizens participating in Humane Lobby Day 2010 met Thursday with state legislators at the state Capitol in support of stronger animal protection laws.

The Humane Society of the United States also presented Wisconsin state Rep. Jeff Smith, D-EauClaire, with a Humane State Legislator award.

Each year, The Humane Society of the United States, the nation's largest animal protection organization, recognizes state lawmakers across the country who have initiated path-breaking animal protection legislation and demonstrably advanced reform in the policy-making arena.

Rep. Smith received the award for his active leadership to negotiate a compromise among stakeholders and to pass The Dog Breeders Licensure Bill (2009 WI Act 90) to regulate large-scale puppy producing operations, known as puppy mills. Thanks to Smith's efforts, Wisconsin's dogs will be protected from the worst abuses and the state will join others in addressing this important animal welfare issue.

"I am honored to receive this recognition from The Humane Society of the United States for my work on animal protection in the Wisconsin legislature," Rep. Smith said. "I'm proud of the comprehensive consensus we developed, and the patient activism from various stakeholders."

"Thanks to the determined efforts of Representative Smith, Wisconsin is now known as a state that will not tolerate the animal abuse occurring at puppy mills," said Alyson Bodai, The HSUS' Wisconsin state director. "The Humane Society of the United States is proud to honor Representative Smith with this award and acknowledge his humane leadership on animal welfare issues."

In addition, Gov. Jim Doyle passed a resolution recognizing Tuesday, Feb. 23, as Spay Day. Spay Day is The HSUS' annual campaign designed to highlight the importance of saving animal lives by spaying or neutering. On Spay Day and throughout the month of February, The HSUS brings together hundreds of spay/neuter events to create a wave of spay/neuter activity and awareness across the country.
