River Falls (Press Release) -- Noses at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls campus community have been waiting, and their patience is finally being rewarded with a foul but rare odor: the blossom of the titan arum, also known as the ‘corpse flower.'
The plant, known for its offensive rotting meat-like smell, began blooming this afternoon. This is the first bloom for UWRF's titan arum, received in 2001 as a gift from UW-Madison.
Public viewing hours at the UWRF greenhouse are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Tonight however, the greenhouse will remain open until 9:30 p.m. The bloom is expected to be short-lived, in full bloom from 6-36 hours.
Members of the public unable to visit the university's greenhouse can watch as the noxious blossom unfolds via a live video stream at http://www2.uwrf.edu/college-of-agriculture/CorpseFlowerStream.htm.
