One dead, officer injured in Tomah shooting

Tomah (WXOW) - A police officer is wounded and suspect dead after he fires on  officers Friday night in a Tomah neighborhood.

According to Tomah Police Chief Wesley Revels, officers following up on a drive-by shooting that occured earlier in the day pulled over a vehicle around 625pm in the 200 block of East Saratoga Street.

When the vehicle stopped, the driver got out of the vehicle and began shooting at the officers, who returned fire. During the shooting, one officer was wounded by gunfire. The suspect, identified only as a 28-year-old white male, got back in his vehicle.

With backup from other city, county, and state authorities, police sealed off the area.  The La Crosse County Sheriff's Department Bearcat Armored Vehicle was brought in and was used to safely approach the suspect's vehicle says Revels.  The suspect was found dead inside the vehicle.

Tomah Police are working with the state's Division of Criminal Investigation and the Wisconsin Crime Lab with gathering evidence in the investigation.

Revels says the wounded officer, whose name has not been released, was taken by ambulance to a La Crosse hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

More details on the shooting will be released at a news conference scheduled for Saturday afternoon at the Tomah Police Department.
