Bloomer (WQOW) - WQOW News 18 is honoring a band director for his work on the job, and in a different job.
WQOW News 18 presented the Golden Apple Award to Matt Tiller Friday. He's the high school band director in Bloomer. Students say he challenges them, but at the same time, allows them to make key decisions themselves as they learn the music.
Tiller is a UW-Eau Claire alum and says those marching band practices in college helped shape his philosophy, "It was just fun. We had fun everyday that we rehearsed and we were making music at the same time so it's that general philosophy of valuing music and getting kids to enjoy that."
This is Matt's first year on the job in Bloomer. As he was preparing for his first concert last fall, the choir director called and said she was on her way to the hospital, so she wouldn't be able to lead students during the choir's performance. Matt stepped in and pulled double duty.
Well done and congratulations on the Golden Apple Matt!
