Eau Claire (WQOW) - The state's record setting budget shortfall has at least one local university leader setting his sights on less.
UW-Stout Chancellor Charles Sorenson says he's expecting to see significant funding cuts as a result of the state's projected $5.4 billion budget deficit. He says around a third of UW-Stout's funding comes from the state but he says the school is prepared for what lies ahead.
"There will be cuts, I've been in this racket for 30 years. We'll have a budget reduction or a budget lapse of some type. But we're preapred at the system level to do it, at this level to do it. I think we're ready to handle what's given to us," says Chancellor Sorensen.
To keep the university's budget balanced the chancellor says they've already cut down on travel expenses and some open jobs will be left vacant. Stout also has several building projects planned and Sorenson says he doesn't think those will be affected.
