Menomonie (WQOW) - College students look to make a tough situation for kids a little easier.
On Sunday, UW-Stout students collected 70 teddy bears as part of a class project. The bears are donated to the Menomonie Police Department and given out to children when police respond to domestic violence.
"Usually when you're at an incident where a kid is scared, things get calmed down and then you hand them that teddy bear or stuffed animal that we get, it usually goes from a scared sad to a big smile on their face," says Officer Patrick Meyer, Menomonie Police Department.
A few of the bears will also go to local nursing homes for senior citizens. All of the teddy bears have special messages attached to them to inspire those who get them.
"The children can see the quotes on them and give them hope and happiness to realize that someone out there cares about them no matter what they're going through," says Connie Christopherson, organizer of the teddy bear drive.
Some of those sayings include 'Change your thought and change the world' and 'A smile is a curve that sets everything straight.'
No matter how many teddy bears the police department gets, it says they can always use more. Most of them are brought in through donations like Sunday's. If you are interested in donating a teddy bear, just drop it off at the police department.
