The high school football regular season came to a close Friday night with week nine of the season.  Here are some scores and highlights from around the state. 


Milton's Seeman claims state golf championship Video included

Milton's Mia Seeman held off all challengers on the second day of the WIAA Division 1 State Tournament at University Ridge Golf Course. She claimed the individual state championship by two strokes by shooting a combined score of 145 through the two-day tournament. Milton finished second in the team competition. Verona was sixth. Middleton took eighth.


Edgewood girls golf finishes second at state tournament Video included

The Edgewood girls golf team made a strong run at a WIAA Division 2 State Championship at University Ridge Golf Course. However, the Crusaders settled for second behind Aquinas. Grace Welch led the way for Edgewood by finishing in fifth place in the individual standings.

Not Settling For "Shorter" Than State Video included

Next week ,the Verona girls' golf team will be one of twelve squads to tee off at the state tournament. A big reason why they've come this far is because their top two golfers - who also happen to be twins.


Middleton edges Verona for sectional golf title Video included

The Middleton and Verona girls golf teams went shot-for-shot at the WIAA Division 1 sectional tournament. After tying for the team title, Middleton was ultimately declared the winner on a scorecard tiebreaker. 


Edgewood wins girls golf sectional championship Video included

The Edgewood girls earned another trip to state by claiming the Sectional Championship at Yahara Golf Club. Grace Welch paced Edgewood by shooting 83. She finished in second place.

Roelke hits 50 years coaching football in DeForest

If you have been to a football practice in DeForest in the last 50 years, there is a good chance Jerry Roelke was there. The long time coach enters his 50th season with the program. 


Belleville opens season by honoring fallen teammate

The Belleville Wildcats opened their season with a win last week, but they did so without one of their senior captains, Eric O'Connor. He died in an ATV accident in July. The team now triumphs over tragedy in his honor.

For the Middleton football team, the expectations never change. The Cardinals always expect to be in the hunt for a Big Eight title. Although, the Cardinals have been hit hard by the injury bug.

The high school football season is officially underway. A small number of teams across the state kicked off the season with Thursday night matchups.

The Waunakee football team is known for having good teams with a strong running attack, but it's not often their run game is lead by two seniors with fathers that played in the National Football League. 


Fort Atkinson's Troy Nachtigal uses football to play at West Point

Not every high school football player gets to play at the college level. Fort Atkinson senior linebacker Troy Nachtigal will play at the collegiate level, and serve his country at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York. 


Sun Prairie looking to repeat as Big Eight champs

One week away from the start of the football season, expectations are high at Sun Prairie, as usual. The Cardinals were co-champions of the Big Eight conference a year ago. With 12 returning starters, Sun Prairie is the favorite to claim the title again this year. 


Thornton returns home to take over at Madison East

Jeremy Thornton knows what it's like to have success on the gridiron at Madison East High School. The former All-Conference quarterback led the Purgolders to the playoffs as a senior. More than a decade later, he's returned to his alma mater as the head coach. 


All-City Swim Meet returns to Maple Bluff

For the first time since 1964, the All-City Swim Meet returned to Maple Bluff Country Club. The annual event kicked off Thursday morning. It will run through Saturday. 


Sun Prairie couple shares their love of bowling

John and Cher Breunig are sharing their love of bowling with the next generation in Sun Prairie. Under the Breunig's guidance, the Cardinals recently brought home a national championship.


Deb Hauser retires from WIAA

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association will soon be saying farewell to one of it's longtime leaders. Associate Director Deb Hauser has announced she will be retiring following the 2017-18 school year. 


Four future Badgers hear name called in NHL Draft

The second day of the 2017 NHL Draft marked the 20th consecutive season that the University of Wisconsin had a player drafted as four incoming freshman were selected.  


WIAA to begin use of shot clocks in varsity basketball

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control has voted to implement a 35-second shot clock in the varsity basketball ranks beginning with the 2019-20 season. 


Girl's State Soccer: Edgewood and Oregon Lose in Semifinals

Edgewood and Oregon had their season's come to a close in their respective divisions in semifinal final play of the WIAA girl's soccer state tournament on Friday in Milwaukee.


Sun Prairie baseball falls to Kimberly in state championship

The Kimberly baseball team scored three runs in the sixth inning to beat Sun Prairie 4-2 in the WIAA Division 1 State Championship. Carson Holin led the Cardinals' offensive attack with two hits and a RBI. Sun Prairie finishes the season with a 25-7 record. More>>

Kimberly eliminates Waunakee from WIAA state baseball tournament

The dream of a state championship ended in the quarterfinal round for the Waunakee baseball team. The Warriors fell to Kimberly 11-2 at the WIAA state baseball tournament at Fox Cities Stadium. 


State Baseball: Sun Prairie Opens With Win Over Beloit Memorial

The Sun Prairie Cardinals picked up win 23 on the season after a 2-1 win against Beloit Memorial in the opening round of the WIAA State Baseball Tournament at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute on Tuesday. 


Juda/Albany girls softball claims first State Championship

After falling in the state semifinals two years ago, the Panthers were determined to not come back empty handed.


Beloit Turner softball advances to state championship game

The Beloit Turner softball team will be playing for a state championship on Saturday. The Trojans blanked New London 3-0 in the WIAA Division 2 State semifinals. 


Marshall softball falls in state semifinals

The season came to a close for the Marshall softball team in the WIAA Division 3 semifinals. The Cardinals fell to Weyauwega-Fremont 2-0. 


McDonell Central holds on to beat Belmont in state softball tournament

The Belmont softball team made a late rally but still came up short in the Division 5 state semifinals. McDonell Central held on for a 5-4 win at Goodman Diamond. Belmont only managed four hits in the contest. Lydia Leahy drove in two runs. Sadie Willborn absorbed the loss despite allowing just one earned run over 6 innings.  Belmont's season ends with a 28-3 record. More>>

The Sun Prairie softball team's season came to a close on the opening day of the WIAA State Softball Tournament. The Cardinals fell to Stevens Point 6-0 in a Division 1 quarterfinal.
