Scrap Metal Prices Dropping

Eau Claire (WQOW) - From record highs to record lows, the economy has sent scrap metal prices plunging.

In the last 3 months, the price of scrap metal has fallen to between $200 and $400 a ton, to some of the lowest prices since the mid-1990's.

Local recyclers say a lack of new construction, along with problems in the auto industry and credit market has caused demand for metals to drop.

Because of the low prices, less people are bringing in the materials for recycling and as a result, businesses have had to cut employee hours.
