Out: larger expensive camcorders. In: small, inexpensive camcorders that are pocket-sized, kid-friendly and simple to upload.

The Good Housekeeping Research Institute tested 9 brands in their labs for video and sound quality and features. Consumers were asked to try the products out by taking and uploading video, and the Institute checked footage quality. I

"We're looking at video quality, we're looking at the color, how clear the picture is, sound," says Todd Kent, test engineer with the Good Housekeeping Research Institute.

The Flip Mino had the best video of the standard def camcorder.

If you want a hi-def look, go with the Creative Vado HD. This camera had the best average video quality indoor and out.

And engineers and testers were blown away by the outdoor footage from the Kodak Zi6. But under low-light, the video was weaker.

These camcorders come with software that launches when you connect the unit to your computer. Double-check that it's compatible with your computer.
