Hair care on a budget

MADISON (WKOW) - When budgets shrink, visits to your hair stylist may lessen, too. But the good housekeeping research institute tested permanent and semi-permanent brands to find out which products will make you look like you've just stepped out of the hair salon.

In the semi-permanent category, Clairol's Natural Instincts brown and red stood out for its coverage, shine and fade resistance.

Revlon Colorsilk was a top performer for its brunette and red permanent colors. The dark brown covered grays completely and, after 4 weeks, didn't fade. The burgundy product experienced some fading after the same amount of time.

Charmaine Gillespie, a chemist at the Good Housekeeping Research Institute said, "this may be because the red dye molecules are large and tend to wash out more easily than the blondes and the browns."

Clairol's Nice 'n Easy natural dark neutral blonde gets excellent marks for shine retention and fade resistance.

"While the blonde dyes did a great job of giving shine to hair and resisting fading," said Gillespie, "we found it didn't do such a good job at covering the grays."

If you're new to home hair coloring, good housekeeping recommends trying a semi-permanent shade. The color lasts for 6-12 shampoos and then washes out.
