Tri-County Memorial names three to administrative positions

WHITEHALL (Press Release) - Tri-County Memorial Hospital and Nursing Home has tabbed a current department director and two La Crescent, Minn., residents to administrative positions, Chief Executive Officer Brian Theiler announced.

Rehabilitation Services Director and physical therapist Dan Backman of Independence has been named Patient Support Services Executive Director.

Sean Parker has been named new Human Resources Director, and Patti Dockendorff has been named new Chief Financial Officer.

Dan Backman
Backman, his wife Kellie and family moved to Whitehall in March 1996. He was named Rehab Services director in April of that year and has been in that role for 13 years.

Theiler said Backman "has steadily demonstrated his commitment to exceptional patient care and customer service. He has grown his department and established its reputation as a true partner within the Gundersen Lutheran Health System."

In his new role, Backman works closely with Lana Pientok, RN, who earlier this year was named Patient Care Services Executive Director.

The two are responsible to coordinate and direct patient, resident and tenant care and the departments that support that work, Theiler said.

"He and Lana will be instrumental in helping us build the vision for one central Trempealeau County healthcare system."

In his new position, Dan will remain Rehabilitation Services director.

Backman earned two bachelor's of arts degrees - in physical therapy and business management - from the College of St. Scholastica, Duluth, Minn.

The Backmans have three children: Sam, a senior at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota; Mandy, a junior at the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point; and Molly, an Independence high-school junior.

Sean Parker
"Sean demonstrates a small-town, personal touch," Theiler said. "He delivers meals on wheels in St. Charles, Minn., and is a volunteer for Neighbors in Action in La Crescent. He referees soccer. He leads by example as much with his involvement as with his knowledge."

Parker came to Tri-County Memorial from Golden Living, a 22-state group of companies that includes Golden Living Centers and Aegis Therapies, both of which serve patients and communities in western Wisconsin and southeastern Minnesota.

In 2008, Parker was Director of Sales and Marketing at the La Crescent Golden Living Center. Prior to that, he was corporate training manager for Ashley Furniture Homestores in 2007 and 2008.

He was a human resources generalist and recruiter for Nationwide Insurance from 2005 to 2007, expanding upon his previous position as human resources consultant for Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.

Parker also served in the United States Peace Corp from 1996 to 1998, working in the South American country of Suriname.

Parker has a bachelor's degree in French from the University of Texas at Austin, and a master's degree in economics from St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas. He is currently conducting dissertation research on leadership communication at Northwestern University.

He earned certifications as both an Internet Recruiter and Diversity Recruiter from AIRS, a national recruitment-training provider. He is completing coursework to earn a senior professional in human resources (SPHR) certification.

Patti Dockendorff
Dockendorff leads Tri-County Memorial's evolving Business division, which includes the current Business Office and Data Processing staffs.

She also is working closely with Information Technology Director John Rohland on business processes and updating technology.

Theiler said Dockendorff and he have worked together in the health system for many years.

"She has an unrivaled understanding and passion for rural health care and has made that her focus her entire career," Theiler said.

Dockendorff has been on the Tri-County Memorial Board of Directors since 2006. Most recently, she also was "on loan" from Gundersen Lutheran to provide financial leadership and expertise after the former CFO's departure.

While at Gundersen Lutheran, Dockendorff spent much of her career providing financial oversight, analysis and advice to several of the health system's affiliates and partner.

Dockendorff graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee with a business administration degree in accounting and obtained her certified public account license shortly thereafter.

She moved to La Crosse after graduation to work at the regional CPA firm Hawkins, Ash Baptie, and began working with client Lutheran Hospital. She shifted to Gundersen Lutheran in 1986.

Patti has two adult children: Joe, of St. Paul, Minn., and Jenny, of La Crosse.

Patti has been active in La Crescent with the Youth Hockey Association, the La Crescent City Planning Commission and in hand-bell choir and church council.
