WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKOW) -- An official at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Sunday that it's riskier not to get the new H1N1 flu vaccine.
Dr. Anne Schuchat said she is surprised by the criticism and misinformation that is circulating about the new vaccine, which was derived and clinically tested on an accelerated level following the virus's emergence in the United States earlier this spring.
Schuchat said there is a good safety record from past vaccines, which bodes well for the swine flu vaccine that is starting to become available. About a dozen states, including Wisconsin, began receiving shipments of the nasal mist version of the vaccine last week.
Schuchat said there should be no problems or complications for anyone who receives shots for both the swine flu and regular season flu on the same day.
Health officials are recommending a three-week period between receiving the nasal version of the vaccines.
Schuchat said vaccines remain the best way to protect children and adults from both fly strains.
She made the comments during an appearance Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."
