Truck falls through the ice on Lake Altoona

Lake Altoona (WQOW) - Two men are okay after their truck goes through the ice. It happened Saturday afternoon on Lake Altoona.

Officials say the men drove out onto the lake for ice fishing. When the truck began to crack through the ice, witnesses say, the men were able to get out through the windows, before the truck went in.

"They said they started going in and they had to go through the windows, they couldn't get the doors open," said Jim Cooley, who called 911 after seeing the truck in the water. "They weren't wet, but they were pretty shaken up."

"The ice did not form very well prior to the snowfall, so the ice that's out there is not going to be a good strong, solid ice," said Joe Alf, chief of rescue services for the Township Fire Department. "It's going be mixed with slush and snow and it's probably not a good idea to be out on the ice."

Officials say the men are lucky to have escaped without injury. Crews were working to remove the truck from the lake on Saturday evening.
