Researchers: only about 5 percent of adults have food allergies

NEW YORK (WKOW) -- The number of people allergic to some sort of food is growing, but are you sure when you actually classify it as an allergy?

Thirty million people think so, but California researchers say only about 5 percent of adults and 10 percent of children actually have an allergy to food, and researchers say it's because the testing is not up to par.

There are three tests: an eating challenge, or most common a skin test where you are pricked to see if the skin reacts, or a blood test that looks for antibodies associated with particular foods.

Researchers say half of the time skin and blood tests are wrong and new guidelines should be developed to better diagnose food allergies.
