Theresa and Ken grew up together and were always close friends. When Ken left for college, a part of Theresa felt empty; soon she found out Ken felt the same way, and they started dating.

THE BRIDE: Theresa, 28, a registered nurse
THE GROOM: Ken, 28, a web programmer
THE DATE: August 8

Eight years later, Theresa and Ken took a weekend getaway to Desert Springs. After they checked in, they went off to explore the resort and by dusk, they wound up sitting on a bench near one of the private lakes. That's when Ken pulled a ring out of his pocket and completely surprised Theresa by asking her to marry him.

The Ceremony The couple's afternoon ceremony took place in their local parish. Two large Manzanita branches, draped with beads and dotted with purple dahlias and pink orchids, decorated the altar.

The Reception Theresa and Ken wanted an urban reception space, and SmogShoppe, with its brick walls, provided just that. To lighten up the dark linens and lilac suede chairs, airy paper lanterns hung from the ceiling. And for a personal touch (and a few laughs), Theresa's favorite episodes of I Love Lucy were projected on one wall during dinner.

The Centerpieces Like they did for most of the wedding decor, Theresa and Ken chose flowers in different shades of purple for the centerpieces, including tulips, hydrangeas, and roses. They were arranged in glass vases of varying shapes and textures.

The Reception Decor The couple chose a bright-purple ribbon to wrap around the eggplant napkins.

The Cake For a feminine look, Theresa and Ken incorporated butterflies into their wedding motif. Purple and white ones, handmade of sugar, cascaded down their smooth, buttercream cake.
