Republican tells AP: Walker, Kleefisch threatened

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A person within the Republican party tells The Associated Press that police are investigating a threat against Gov. Scott Walker and Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch.

The Republican was briefed on the threat and spoke on condition of anonymity because the person wasn't authorized to release the information publicly.

Senate Chief Clerk Robert Marchant sent a memo Wednesday informing all state Senate offices that the FBI, the Capitol Police and other local law enforcement agencies are "taking steps to address the threat" against various Wisconsin public officials, including two state senators.

The memo does not name the targets.

Word of the threat comes four days after an assassination attempt on U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Arizona.
