MADISON (WKOW) -- Wisconsin residents will get a chance to sound off on whether they should be allowed to shoot problem cougars.
Right now, cougars are a protected species in Wisconsin. No one can shoot or trap one without advance permission from state wildlife officials.
The closest known cougar population to Wisconsin resides in South Dakota, but Wisconsin biologists have confirmed the presence of four cougars in the state over the last three years.
The Department of Natural Resources has proposed allowing landowners to shoot cougars caught in the act of attacking a domestic animal.
The DNR's board on Wednesday approved putting the proposal up for public discussion at the DNR's annual spring hearings agenda. The hearings are scheduled to take place in every county on April 11.
