DNR wants phosphorus rules delayed

MADISON (WKOW)-- Wisconsin's new rules to keep phosphorus out of lakes may not take effect this year, as planned.

Governor Walker wanted to scale back the rules in his original budget.

Now, the DNR is asking for a two-year delay in putting the law into effect.

Environmentalists say any change would be a step in the wrong direction.

"It can have a negative impact on tourism and it really hurts the whole recreation economy, and also property values," said Thomas Thrall, a retired biologist.

The DNR says the two-year wait would give communities time to find more efficient implementation options.
