Eau Claire (WQOW) - When money is tight healthy food can be hard to come by. But for families with young children nutrition is what their growing bodies need most. That's why we're bringing attention to a place where families can go to receive a hot, healthy meal for free, no questions asked.
"We try to make as much as we possibly can that's homemade, completely from scratch," says Tami Syverson, Kitchens Operations Manager at The Community Table in Eau Claire. "We are very careful about the sodium that we put in or the sugar that goes into our meals."
Fresh and nutritious meals are served up daily at The Community Table, it's a resource that staff worry is largely unknown in Eau Claire. "We know for a fact," continued Tami, "that there are people in our community that could benefit from The Community Table who don't know about us."
"Pridewise, it's hard to say I need help," added Rachel Keniston, Executive Director. A helping hand is what The Community Table provides, and they want families who need that help to take advantage. "Nutrition for a child's development and well-being, for their school performance, nutrition is what it's about," says Rachel.
Most often families with children will come to the soup kitchen near the end of the month, when money is the tightest, and they can no longer afford to put food on the table. Rachel hopes, "In an ideal situation, come and use it regularly so that money is available to be used for other things that are necessities."
Free meals are served daily at The Community Table, located on Putnam Street. Those meals are prepared and served largely, by volunteers.
