WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKOW) -- For the second year in a row, a local WKOW nominee has won national recognition in Washington, D.C.

Andy and Jenny Czerkas received the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis award Tuesday night at the national Jefferson Award ceremony.

The Czerkas' founded The River Food Pantry in Madison.

The Jefferson Award is known as the 'Nobel Prize for public service.'

They are among 13 people honored at the 39th annual event.

The awards are given to 'unsung heroes' for their extraordinary and selfless volunteer work in their community.

The Czerkas' joined high-profile people at the podium from Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, to actress Marlo Thomas, to sports team owner Jerry M. Reinsdorf.

WKOW brought the Jefferson Awards to the Madison-area in 2009.

This is the second nomination and second national honor for local WKOW recipients.

Last year, Jackie Millar was honored at the national ceremony. Millar was shot in the head and left for dead. Not only did she survive, she forgave the teen boy who shot her and his accomplice. Millar now speaks at schools, prisons, juvenile detention centers about love, choices, and forgiveness.
