Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire to offer flu shots

EAU CLAIRE (Press Release) — All people age 6 months and older are encouraged to get their influenza vaccinations. The seasonal influenza vaccine includes protection against the H1N1 virus.

Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire will hold a Flu Shot Clinic in late October and early November:

  • Dates: Oct. 24 to Nov. 4
  • Times: 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday
  • Location: Mayo Clinic Health System, 727 Kenney Ave. Directions: From Clairemont Avenue, go south on Stein Boulevard. Go past Kenney Avenue, and turn left into first driveway. Park in the lot in front of 727 Kenney Ave.
  • Walk-ins only: No appointment necessary.
  • Cost: The cost of seasonal flu vaccine is covered by some insurance plans. Mayo Clinic Health System will bill insurance, or payment is accepted.
  • Pediatric half dose: Children younger than 10 years old need two flu vaccines if it's the child's first seasonal flu vaccination. The second vaccine is given at least four weeks from the date of the first.
  • High dose: A high dose was created to generate a stronger immune response to influenza in people age 65 and older.
  • Information: Call 715-838-6988.

Patients also can receive flu shots during scheduled appointments with their primary care provider.

Influenza can lead to pneumonia and can be dangerous for people with heart or breathing problems. It can cause high fever and seizures in children. In the United States, influenza kills about 36,000 people each year, mostly the elderly. The best way to prevent spreading the flu is to get vaccinated. Viruses in the flu shot are inactivated so you cannot get the flu from the shot.
