In Person: Susan Sveda-Uncapher

Eau Claire (WQOW) - If you're looking for artwork to match your living room couch, sculptress Susan Sveda-Uncapher is not your go-to source.

Sveda-Uncapher marches to the beat of her own muse – and that muse couldn't care less about interior design. Unless …you're talking about the interior design of the human heart…

Susan's three-dimensional passion is love stories, and love isn't always pretty. Love stories are sometimes secretive, and dark, and blood-stained. Love stories limp along as often as they cavort. Nothing is certain in love or art, but this is; Sveda-Uncapher's creations leap out at you, grab you by the gut pump and the gray matter, and wrestle you to the gallery floor squealing.

What is art? A pretty painting? A lifelike drawing? A decorator vase?

Or is it the expression of our most basic humanity turned loose upon the clichés that hold our lives captive?

In the full interview Susan reflects upon her evolution as an artist, from her days as an illustrator in the military and master's student at the University of Chicago, through next year's retrospective at the Eau Claire Regional Arts Center with her artist son Alex. She talks about ideas that are birthed by bouts of daydreaming in the bathtub, and creative outcomes that "shock and awe."

Sveda-Uncapher's works involve you whether you like it or not, but especially if you have either a brain or a heart.
