Eau Claire (WQOW) - Your smart phone could soon help you make smarter choices about replacing light bulbs.
The City of Eau Claire wants to get in on the craze. Eau Claire is one of four cities to team up with a Milwaukee-based app developer. The company has an app that helps users find the most energy-efficient light bulb.
Eau Claire has been making efforts to go green.
"The city is concerned about energy and reducing our own energy consumption and also renewables," says Ned Noel, City of Eau Claire Associate Planner.
It wants to expand those efforts to citizens with a new smart-phone app.
"It's a good indicator on what our community is doing and the types of actions, behavior and how they're making decisions to enhance the environment in our area locally," says Noel.
The app is fairly easy to use.
"You're able to put in information based off the lighting you have, incandescent, different types of light bulbs at your home or business," says Noel.
It then makes a recommendation on what type of light bulb to switch to along with information about savings.
"The app not only tells you energy saved, but also the dollar value you would save over the lifetime of the bulb and also greenhouse gases reduced," says Noel.
The app is also designed with information on other local efforts to go green in the Eau Claire area, like the Eau Claire Chamber of Commerce's green business program and Sustainable Eau Claire.
The app is available for free. As part of the agreement, the city receives quarterly reports detailing how much residents are saving.
