WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- Monday January 16, 2012 is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the United States. All throughout the country and here locally, Americans will remember the man and his dream.

Several events are going on around Madison to commemorate the day. The Overture Center Capital Theater is hosting the 27th annual holiday observance. Civil rights pioneer, Rev. C-T Vivian will serve as the keynote speaker. He was a friend and lieutenant of Dr. King. The event starts at 6 p.m. and its free for everyone.

A "Peace in the Streets" march is set for Monday afternoon in Madison. The Southwest Community organizing committee is cosponsoring it. It starts at noon in the Wisconsin Youth Company parking lot. It's located on McKenna blvd. A speaker and discussion will follow at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church also on McKenna blvd.

This year, many will also journey to our nation's capitol to commemorate the day. The new Memorial for Dr. King is open to the public. If you can't make it our to Washington D.C. any time soon, you can learn more about the monument at its official website.
