Madison (WQOW) - A state lawmaker wants to eliminate the statute of limitations for some serious crimes.
Right now, someone can't be prosecuted for attempted murder or raping an adult if six years has gone by. Assemblyman Jim Steineke wants to do away with the statute of limitations completely for those crimes. He says the use of DNA now makes it possible to solve cases long after they happened.
Steineke also says the emotional and physical toll can stay with a victim for years, and the attacker should not be able to "breathe easy" after only six years.
