Western Wisconsin (WQOW) - Senator Terry Moulton claims more than 6,000 signatures came from people who now live outside the 23rd Senate District.
Moulton is one of four Republican senators facing a potential recall. All four are challenging the petitions filed against them. There were 21,000 signatures submitted targeting Moulton. About 15,000 valid signatures are needed to force a recall election against him. On Thursday, he filed paperwork, challenging 12,373. Moulton claims at least 6,261 came from people he no longer represents, if you factor in the new legislative boundaries. He believes those maps should've been in play when signatures were collected.
That's the focus of a legal argument being raised by a group that supports the Republican lawmakers. The Committee to Elect a Republican Senate says if the Government Accountability Board doesn't address the question about the legislative maps, a recall election against Moulton will likely move forward.
Among the other challenges filed: Moulton says at least 265 people signed the recall petition at least twice. He also claims at least 125 signatures should be thrown out because multiple signatures appeared in the same handwriting.
The GAB must now decide how many signatures will stand. The deadline is March 19th.
