Augusta (WQOW) - A frac sand company says the turnout at its job fair on Tuesday was far beyond what it expected.
Hi-Crush is looking to fill up to 75 jobs in Eau Claire County. It wants to mine sand in the Town of Bridge Creek and operate a processing facility in Augusta. The company says 682 people turned in applications during a job fair on Tuesday night. Another 100 or so picked up applications.
Hi-Crush is hiring for many positions, including engineers and wet/dry plant operators. The minimum starting wage is $16/hour, but the company says that goes up depending on someone's skill set or experience.
Eau Claire County has a sand mining moratorium right now, but there's an amendment on the table that would exempt Hi-Crush. The county could vote on that amendment in early March.
The company hopes to be up and running by August, but plans to hire long before that.
