Mining moratorium lifted for one company

Posted:

Eau Claire County (WQOW) - The application process for one sand mining company can now move forward in Eau Claire County.

On Tuesday night, the county board lifted its frac sand mining moratorium for Hi-Crush.  That company wants to mine in the Town of Bridge Creek.  The board voted 17-9 in favor of an amendment that would exempt Hi-Crush's application from the moratorium.

Another company was hoping for the same fate, but a proposal to exempt High Country Sands was defeated by a vote of 16-10.  The company wants to mine in the Town of Otter Creek.  There were concerns about how the company conducted itself during the process.  For example:  High Country sued when the county wouldn't take up its application, which was submitted a day before the moratorium was enacted last fall.

The county moratorium runs through the end of May.
