County approves amendment to sand mining moratorium

Eau Claire County (WQOW) - Restrictions have been lifted for a second sand mining company in Eau Claire County.

The attorney for High Country Sands says the county board voted to amend its frac sand mining moratorium on Wednesday.  That means the county can process High Country's application to mine sand in the Town of Otter Creek.

The county's moratorium runs through May.  Recently, the county board approved an exemption for Hi-Crush, but rejected one for High Country.  There were concerns about how that company had handled itself.  For example:  High Country sued when the county wouldn't take up its application which was submitted a day before the moratorium was enacted last fall.

High Country's attorney says board members were now more comfortable with the company and its plans.  The attorney says that lawsuit against the county will now be dismissed.

Wednesday's vote was 17-9.
