Eau Claire County (WQOW) - We now have a better idea of why a man was walking on the interstate when he was hit by a car.
The incident happened Monday on I-94 just west of Eau Claire. The State Patrol says a 52-year-old Menomonie man made arrangements for someone to give him a ride, but decided to start walking and meet the person along the way. While he was crossing the interstate, a car hit him in the leg. The man was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released for minor injuries.
UPDATE from Press Release: The Wisconsin State Patrol is investigating a crash involving a pedestrian and one vehicle on the interstate. The incident occurred on April 9, 2012 at 3:55 p.m. near mile post 59 in Eau Claire County.
Sarah Courtney, 19, of Milwaukee was driving her Honda Accord eastbound on I-94 in the left lane. She
saw a man walking across her lane. Courtney stated she applied her brakes and swerved to the right, but was unable to avoid striking the man.
John A. Spanjers, 52, of Menomonie was walking on the interstate and was struck in the leg. He rolled into the median. He remained conscious throughout the incident and his injuries were not life-threatening. Spanjers had made arrangements for a ride, but decided to start walking and meet the car that was coming for him along the way. The crash remains under investigation.
As a reminder; no pedestrian or person riding a bicycle or other non-motorized vehicle and no person operating a moped or motor bicycle may go upon an expressway or freeway. Signs are erected at each on-ramp to the interstate prohibiting such use.

On Monday afternoon, a man was hit by a car while trying to cross I-94 on foot. The State Patrol says the man, who was taken to an area hospital, was alert when emergency crews arrived on scene.
The State Patrol isn't sure why he was trying to cross the interstate. Traffic was down to one lane while crews responded. The lane has since been re-opened.
