Historic Downsville restaurant reopens under new name and management

Downsville (WQOW) - It's safe to say some people can hardly wait for a restaurant to reopen.  The Downsville Creamery closed in 2010. Now, after opening up an assisted living home in the other half of the building, two sisters are re-opening the restaurant.

A little piece of history is reopening in Downsville, with a new name.

"We came up with Red Cedar Lodge because it's along the river, and lodge brings in a lot of things," says Melissa Schoeder.

"We're trying to bring the past back in, keep it what it was, and yet have it be something fresh and new at the same time," adds Dawn Schoeder.

The Schoeder sisters opened up the other half of the building as an assisted living home at the end of last year.

"It's a beautiful building, and when you don't go in that building, you let it sit empty, it rots, and it's got so much history to it. It's part of Downsville. It's part of the community," Melissa says.

Last minute preparations are underway at the restaurant, which opens Thursday.

" What we wanted to do was offer something for everyone here. So we switched the small bar into the bigger room where all the fine dining was, and we put a big bar in here," says Melissa, pointing to the dining rooms wooden bar. "The menu, we have very simplified right now. You can get a good burger, you can get a good Philly cheese steak sandwich, you can get a rib eye, but we're going to expand our menu starting around Memorial Day weekend."

Four inn rooms will also be open as well.

"We named each room. It has its own special flair to it," says Melissa.

The sisters say they're trying to keep the historic feel of the building as much as possible, right down to the slogan on the back of the restaurant's shirts, that says "I Can Hardly Wait".

"It is actually an original slogan from the 1980's when they originally refurbished the Creamery and opened it for the first time," says Dawn.

The restaurant re-opens Thursday afternoon.  For more information on the menu and times the restaurant will be open, click here.
