MADISON (WKOW) -- Wisconsin's longest-serving Governor and
current Republican U.S. Senate candidate Tommy Thompson was the featured guest on
Capitol City Sunday.
Few political names in Wisconsin are as recognizable as
Thompson's.
But times have changed since 2001 when he left the
Governor's office, and some question his conservative credentials.
Thompson says he is as conservative as anyone and more
experienced.
"You look at the big
items facing us, who do you want? You want somebody that knows health care, you
want somebody that knows budgets, you want somebody who knows the Congress and,
of all the candidates, I'm the one who knows all of those subjects extremely
well," said Thompson.
Thompson also
defended his creation of Badger Care, a state-run insurance program for the
working poor.
"Some individuals,
small business people, farmers out there, they couldn't get health insurance. Badger Care was the answer," said Thompson.
In the second half of the show, Charles Franklin, the
director of the Marquette University Law School Political Poll, is the guest.
The most recent edition of the poll, released earlier this
week, shows that Tom Barrett may be pulling away from Kathleen Falk in the
Democratic primary race.
"It looks
like there was some gain when Barrett first got in the race, from a seven to a
fourteen or so, and now maybe a 17 point lead," said Franklin. "So, that's a
substantial Barrett lead going into Tuesday's primary."
The poll also shows Barrett in a
statistical dead heat with Governor Scott Walker (R-Wisconsin) if they should
meet in the general election.
"In
January, Walker led Barrett by 6 points. In March that had closed to two points
and now we have these two different types of voters, registered and likely, with
a one point margin to either candidate for both of those," said Franklin.
