Union Cab running on solar power

MADISON (WKOW) -- A Madison company will run its business by harnessing the power of the sun.

On Monday, Union Cab unveiled its solar system at its office on Pennsylvania Avenue.

The system is part of the WisconSUN Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Project, which was started with the goal to build the first solar array from components made entirely in Wisconsin.

The City of Madison selected Union Cab because of its energy-efficient business practices.

Union Cab applied to be involved because it wanted to reduce part of the transportation sector's large contribution to the nation's carbon footprint.

"It's incumbent on us to make sure that we are being as efficient as we possibly can," said Union Cab Treasurer and Green Team member Kate Schachter.

Union Cab says the solar system will offset the carbon footprint of about one and a half of its minivans. It will also save the company at least $30,000 over its lifetime.
