Dane County faces oral health crisis

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- A new report from public health officials says there's an oral health crisis in Dane County.

In 2010, there were more than 11,000 visits to emergency rooms and urgent care centers for dental pain. Officials say it's an expensive and inappropriate use of medical resources. The cost of those visits is more than $1.5 million each year.

"The coalition is working to establish connections between the medical community and the dental community to create programs or opportunities to work together to address those needs in the emergency room," said Tobi Cawthra of Meriter Health Services.

Dane County mirrors a national trend where there's been a bump in the number of hospital emergency visits for preventable dental conditions. Officials also say oral health problems can impact overall health.
